WHO WE ARE
When Morgans opened in New York in 1984, we embarked on a journey to continually challenge tradition and forever change the perception of hotels in an innovative and constantly evolving style. Now is the time for us to be daring and innovative as we embrace a greener lifestyle and continue to set precedents for our industry. Gone are the days of a typecast granola green. Our vision is a vibrant, fresh, alive green – a truly glamorous green.
We are proudly transparent about our progress, creating a 'living wall' on our website to share stories, highlight initiatives, promote local events, invite contributions and introduce partner companies with a refreshing glamorous green style.
An initiative of this scale and importance cannot be accomplished alone. Our tribe, consisting of employees as well as guests, suppliers and associates, share best practices as well as their feedback on what they would like to see, promote local events/initiatives, etc. We also encourage suppliers and contractors to uphold similar environmental standards to those demonstrated by Morgans Hotel Group.
Our employees are particularly empowered during our ongoing initiative. They want to work for a responsible organization and we will live up to their expectations while ensuring they are a part of the process, leading to increased loyalty, productivity and an overall greater sense of community. This internal tribe shares best practices across hotels, regions and countries, with representatives in each Morgans Hotel Group property.
WHAT WE ARE DOING
While there is currently no worldwide uniform standard for measuring and rewarding environmental commitment, we want to create a measured, glamorous green lifestyle. Awards are nice and all, but we'd rather be accountable to the world's betterment. To achieve this, we will concentrate on the key areas of Environment, Sustainability, Utility, Recycling, and Social Responsibility implementing changes across both guest and employee touch points.
A sampling of initiatives in place or planned across existing and new Morgans Hotel Group properties include:
Donating unused soap and toiletries to Clean The World's soap recycling program, which processes, sanitizes and ships items to areas of need. Not only environmentally friendly but also resourcefully humanitarian. At just one of our hotels, we can produce enough recycled soap and amenities to keep over 100 children clean and less susceptible to infections (in place across all Morgans Hotel Group properties)
Donating mattresses to charity organizations for both local and overseas needs (currently at Sanderson and St Martins Lane)
Using motion sensor lights in back of house areas, closets and car parks as appropriate.
Reviewing seasonal menus and increasing vegetarian options
Choosing sustainable and responsible ingredients within our food and beverage outlets – including featuring locally sourced ingredients and not offering over-fished species. We are currently researching to join a Community Supported Agriculture program and source local recycling options for compost and fryer oil.
Featuring local organic minibar items and green/sustainable merchandise in 2011 across all properties.
Eliminating the need for paper towels in public restrooms with hand dryers.
Cleaning up the air we breathe by using low or no VOC paint in all back of house areas, and Low VOC paint in many front of house areas.
Reducing water usage with low flow bathroom fixtures
With a blank slate allowing for endless opportunities, our new openings will include implementation of sustainable purchasing, maintenance, and staff education plans, including:
LEED certified buildings
Installation of low flow showers, toilets, sprinklers
Key cards controlling air conditioning and lighting
Low Emission products (paint, solvents etc)
Using only sustainability harvested wood
Recycled carpet, tile, stone
ECO facility on guest air-conditioning units
